Charli XCX has declared her love for the 1967 album ‘The Velvet Underground & Nico’, calling it “the apex of fine art”.She namechecked the debut album by the influential New York City underground rock band in her acceptance speech at Variety’s Hitmakers Awards on Saturday (December 7), where she picked up the Hitmaker of the Year prize.As well as naming some of her other musical inspirations – Lana Del Rey, Caroline Polachek, Jack Antonoff – she singled out the seminal LP and its famous Andy Warhol-designed sleeve as a big contributor to her aesthetic.“In March 1967, The Velvet Underground released their album ‘The Velvet Underground And Nico’,” she said. “It debuted on the Billboard 200 at Number 199. And a few weeks later, it rose to its peak position of 195.

Paul Morrissey, the avant-garde filmmaker who worked on Andy Warhol movies including Chelsea Girls, Flesh, Trash and others who also managed The Velvet Underground in the mid-1960s, died Monday. He was 86.

He wrote more than 80 songs in a period of a little over a year, collectively surveying the range of human experience in the process – humour bled into frustration, regret gave way to forgiveness, sadness tangled with surrealism.”The statement also mentioned that Cale, a “hip-hop zealot”, was inspired by how the genre “wields technology to create multi-dimensional textures or build surprising melodies.

Brian Eno has announced the official soundtrack for his upcoming documentary film, Eno.The musician took to social media to announce the documentary’s accompanying soundtrack, which is due for release digitally on April 19, and on physical in North America and Mexico on June 7 – pre-order your copy now.A post shared by Brian Eno (@brianeno)The soundtrack will consist of 17 tracks, featuring “work from early solo outings, acclaimed collaborations with the likes of David Bryne, John Cale, Cluster and more recently, Fred again… all the way through to music from his latest album, ‘FOREVERANDEVERNOMORE’, and his 2022 appearance at the Acropolis in Athens with brother Roger.”The record will also include three previously unreleased songs – one of which, titled Lighthouse #429′ has now been shared. Kim Gordon has announced her second solo LP ‘The Collective’ and has shared its lead single ‘Bye Bye’.The track sees Gordon hauntingly recite a packing list alongside a dark, trap beat and squealing synths. It is the first song to be shared from ‘The Collective’ which is set for release on March 8 via Matador and is available to pre-order and pre-save here.Directed by filmmaker Clara Balzary – the daughter of Flea – the track’s accompanying video stars Gordon and Thurston Moore‘s daughter Coco Gordon Moore and sees her sneak out of a house and run away to a motel where she changes her clothes, cuts her hair and dances around. Kim shortly shows up to pick her up in a truck from which Coco jumps out and runs away.‘The Collective’ follows Gordon’s 2019 solo debut ‘No Home Record‘.

Nick Vivarelli International Correspondent Brian Eno, the influential British musician, producer and visual artist who has helped define and reinvent the sound of top music artists including David Bowie, U2, Talking Heads, and Coldplay, will be honored by the Venice Biennale Music section with its Golden Lion for lifetime achievement.  Eno is being honored “for his research into the quality, beauty and diffusion of digital sound and for his conception of the acoustic space as a compositional instrument,” the Biennale said in a statement. John Cale has announced details of his first new album in a decade, ‘Mercy’ – listen to his new track ‘Story Of Blood’, a collaboration with Weyes Blood, below.The founding Velvet Underground member will release the new album on January 20, 2023 via Domino.The collaboration-heavy album also features turns from Animal Collective, Fat White Family, Sylvan Esso, Laurel Halo, Tei Shi, Actress and more.Discussing his love of Weyes Blood, Cale said in a statement: “I’d been listening to Weyes Blood’s latest record and remembered Natalie’s puritanical vocals. Jem Aswad Senior Music Editor Considering their short lifespan and relatively slim discography, the Velvet Underground may be the most thoroughly excavated and documented rock band of their era: Nearly every studio and concert recording, acetate and demo has been scrutinized, digitized and optimized for the many awesome boxed sets that have been released since the world caught up with the group’s brilliance in the 1980s, a dozen-odd years after they split up. The foundation of that brilliance, of course, is Lou Reed’s songwriting, which combines a novelist’s gritty realism with equally confrontational rock music, but also includes soft, vulnerable songs like “Pale Blue Eyes” and “I’ll Be Your Mirror” — songs that are all the more poignant because you can sense, somehow, that the sensitive soul who wrote them isalso kind of an asshole.

John Cale has shared an animated video for his new single ‘Night Crawling’.The clip, which you can view below, sees the Velvet Underground multi-instrumentalist hitting the streets of New York in the 1970s with David Bowie.The song is his first new music since 2020 single ‘Lazy Day’ and his collaboration with Kelly Lee Owens on ‘Corner Of My Sky’.“There was this period around mid-late 70s when David and I would run into each other in NY. There was plenty of talk about getting some work done but of course we’d end up running the streets, sometimes until we couldn’t keep a thought in our heads, let alone actually get a song together.

Lou Reed’s 1965 demo of Velvet Underground song ‘Heroin’ has been released, ahead of a new compilation of archival material to mark what would have been his 80th birthday.The track was recorded with John Cale two years before the release of the band’s debut album, ‘The Velvet Underground & Nico’, and is around half the length of the final version.In an effort to gain copyright protection for the recording, Reed posted the tape to himself in an envelope that then remained sealed for over 50 years. It’s a myth that mailing work to yourself somehow instigates copyright protection, by the way, but that fact doesn’t seem to have harmed Reed at all.The release follows the demo version of ‘I’m Waiting For The Man’, which came out last month.

Lou Reed‘s earliest known demo of The Velvet Underground‘s ‘Heroin’ has been released.The 1965 take of the track, which you can listen to below, was put to tape by the late legendary singer-songwriter nearly two years before its release on his former band’s landmark debut album ‘The Velvet Underground & Nico’.It is the latest taste of the forthcoming ‘Words & Music, May 1965’, an archival collection which is set to be released on August 26 via Light In The Attic on what would have been the late singer-songwriter’s 80th birthday.The rare demo finds Reed accompanying himself on guitar and structurally, it is the same as the album version but it is more than three minutes shorter.It follows an early demo of ‘I’m Waiting For The Man’, which was shared last month.The songs on the album were written by Reed and recorded to tape by his future Velvet Underground bandmate John Cale. Reed posted the tape to himself as a “poor man’s copyright” and it remained sealed in its original envelope for nearly 50 years.Elsewhere on the tracklist are previously unreleased demos including ‘Buttercup Song’, ‘Buzz Buzz Buzz’ and ‘Stockpile’.
