Uncensored Director’s Cut of ‘The Doom Generation’ Among Anticipated Screenings at 2023 Sundance Film Festival
Katie Reul editor Director Gregg Araki’s 1995 comedy-thriller “The Doom Generation” first debuted at that year’s Sundance Film Festival, setting in motion the film’s successful trajectory toward the distinction of being a cult classic. Almost three decades later, the film — now remastered in 4K and presented as an uncensored director’s cut — will be enjoyed by audiences again at the 2023 iteration of the Utah-based festival. Also being screened for audiences is a digital restoration of “SLAM,” the 1998 urban crime drama from director Marc Levin that took home the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival that same year. “SLAM” and “The Doom Generation” were announced by the nonprofit Sundance Institute as the first two films in this year’s From the Collection screening line-up.

‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ Costumes Among Additions to Academy Collection – Film News in Brief
McKinley Franklin editor The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has expanded its extensive Academy collection with new additions of costumes, film posters, conceptual art and more. New acquisitions range from costumes featured in the Oscar-winning “Everything Everywhere All at Once” to conceptual art for “E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial.” Other new additions include more than 600 rare silent film posters, collections of producer Gale Anne Hurd, director Harold Ramis, filmmaker Gregg Araki and film scholar Kevin Brownlow and more than 150 hand-painted animation artworks dating, donated by Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw. “We are thrilled and honored to expand the Academy’s collection with these exceptional pieces,” said Academy CEO Bill Kramer. “To be housed at our archive, library and museum, these vital components of the filmmaking process highlight the collaborative disciplines that develop and produce the movies we love. They also demonstrate the Academy’s unique capacity to preserve the full range of film history formats. We are incredibly grateful to our donors for their remarkable gifts to the Academy and for their commitment to illuminating our film history.”

Dream-pop demigods Slowdive return with “kisses,” announce new album and tour
I watch Gregg Araki's The Doom Generation for the first time last week and, not five minutes into the '90s queer Bonnie & Clyde & Clyde thriller, we got the first of two Slowdive needle drops. For the English group, it's one of the perks of being a leader in the emergence of shoegaze and dream-pop — their history can be traced through the underground in some unexpected and very cool ways.

Gregg Araki On the Gay Sex Scene In ‘The Living End’ That Shocked Audiences 30 Years Ago
In 1992, Gregg Araki’s gay indie-thriller The Living End rode a cultural wave of Queer cinema, a cinematic movement which changed the way gay audiences viewed themselves and the world in which they lived. While critical reaction at the time of the film’s release was mixed (Quentin Crisp called the film “dreadful”), The Living End has gone on to maintain an influential place in the annals of gay film. Despite an essentially non-existent budget The Living End went on to become a cult favorite, and influenced a raft of Queer filmmaking which followed in its wake. Now, 30 years after the film hit cinemas, Araki remembers the production of his best known film as “this whole crazy adventure and we had nothing to lose.”Speaking to i-D, in celebration of the film’s 30th anniversary, Araki recalled, “We just kind of went for it.

Director Kenny Ortega on the Queer Aesthetic of His Movies From ‘Hocus Pocus’ to ‘High School Musical’
Ramin Setoodeh New York Bureau ChiefYes, there’s Gus Van Sant, Pedro Almodovar, Lee Daniels, Gregg Araki, Kimberly Peirce, Lisa Cholodenko and Dee Rees. But there is one director who arguably deserves to be included in that group of barrier-breaking LGBTQ filmmakers: Kenny Ortega.Ortega, one of this year’s honorees on Variety’s Power of Pride list, made movies that queer kids could relate to, even if they didn’t know they were queer when they were watching them.In 1992’s “Newsies,” Ortega discovered Christian Bale as a young actor, casting him as the star of Disney’s live-action musical about singing Manhattan newspaper delivery boys during the newsboys’ strike of 1899.
