Depeche Mode frontman Dave Gahan has spoken to NME about the late Mark Lanegan ahead of a special London gig in his honour this week.The former Screaming Trees frontman, Queens Of The Stone Age collaborator, grunge icon and solo pioneer passed away in February 2022 at the age of 57. This Thursday (December 5), a tribute gig for Lanegan will be held at The Roundhouse – the venue of his last live appearance in the city – marking what would have been the legend’s 60th birthday.The night will feature performances from friends and collaborators including Gahan, QOTSA’s Josh Homme and Troy Van Leeuwen, Chrissie Hynde, Primal Scream‘s Bobby Gillespie, Greg Dulli, The Kills‘ Alison Mosshart, Soulsavers and more, all delivering songs from throughout Lanegan’s catalogue.Gahan became friends with Lanegan when they toured together in the ’00s, before going on to record together with Soulsavers and with the Depeche Mode man singing songs penned by and for Lanegan with Humanist.Having also lost Depeche Mode’s Andy Fletcher in the run-up to recording the band’s 2023 album ‘Memento Mori‘, Gahan explained how he was feeling the profound impact of his friends’ passing.“It’s time; you start thinking about time,” he told NME of the shadow cast by Lanegan’s death.

Depeche Mode‘s Dave Gahan, Queens Of The Stone Age‘s Josh Homme, Chrissie Hynde and more have been announced as performers for a Mark Lanegan tribute show this winter.Titled “Mark Lanegan – A celebration”, the one off show will celebrate the late singer and songwriter who passed away at the age of 57 back in early 2022. It will take place on December 5 on what would have been his 60th birthday at London’s Roundhouse which was where he made his final live appearance in the city.Other musicians set to perform at the show include the likes of Primal Scream‘s Bobby Gillespie, Greg Dulli, The Kills‘ Alison Mosshart, Soulsavers and more.

Mark Lanegan track, has been released ahead of the ‘Bubblegum’ reissue.Back in July, a post was shared on the late Screaming Trees frontman’s social media accounts which first hinted at a possible posthumous release.“We appreciate your kind & loving words over the last 2 years. There is lots of news to share with you very soon,” read the caption of the post – which marked the first to be shared on Lanegan’s social media accounts since his passing in 2022.It was then announced by Lanegan’s estate that a ‘Bubblegum’ boxset would be released to celebrate the album’s 20th anniversary – and would include 12 previously unreleased songs.Now, an outtake from the 2004 album, ‘Heard a Train’, is available for streaming.‘Bubblegum XX’ will arrive on August 23 through Beggars Arkive, the catalogue and archive department of Beggars Group.

The Afghan Whigs’ Greg Dulli has spoken to NME about his band’s new album ‘How Do You Burn?’, which features contributions from his late friend and collaborator Mark Lanegan.Work on the Whigs’ ninth studio album, which arrived on Friday (September 9), began in 2020 after COVID-19 curtailed Dulli’s plans to tour his solo record ‘Random Desire’.Forced to record much of the record remotely, Dulli, guitarist/co-producer Christopher Thorn and drummer Patrick Keeler formed a bubble together in California, while bassist John Curley, guitarist Jon Skibic and keyboardist/strings player Rick G. Nelson laid down their parts in Cincinnati, New Jersey and New Orleans respectively.“Most of the records I do are reactions to the one before it, so the solo record was more of a muted affair [while] I went in the opposite direction for ‘How Do You Burn?’,”  Dulli told NME about the latter’s grandiose, energetic sound.“Luckily, Patrick, Christopher and I live in California so I was able to play live with them, [which] gave the record the immediacy I think it has.

Mark Lanegan was the lead singer for the pioneering grunge band Screaming Trees known for the song “Nearly Lost You.”  Mark Lanegan was a singer-songwriter best known as the lead singer for the pioneering psychedelic grunge band Screaming Trees. Lanegan co-founded Screaming Trees in 1984 and the band would become prominent in the Seattle grunge music scene that included Nirvana, Peral Jam, and Soundgarden. In 1990, Kurt Cobain sang lead on two songs for Mark Lanegan’s solo debut ‘The Winding Streets.’ After releasing moderately successful albums, Screaming Trees achieved modern rock and MTV stardom with their hit song “Nearly Lost You,” which was featured on the “Singles” soundtrack. After Screaming Trees broke up in 2000, Lanegan released solo albums and made guest appearances with the popular stoner hard rock band Queens of the Stone Age.
