The Emersons are modest people. Running a farm, along with raising children to be decent, God-fearing and hard-working, is an all-day, all-week business; there isn’t much time for pretension. Even among the rustling pine trees in their little bit of Washington state, however, teenage boys may pick at guitars, noodle out a few songs that sound a bit like the Eagles, imagine rock stardom and dream of being discovered. The true story of the Emerson brothers would be like thousands of others, except for the fact that they were discovered. And that they were discovered, thanks to the internet, 30 years too late.

Stalwart indie filmmaker Bill Pohlad today premeres in Venice Dreamin’ Wild. His directing follow up to the critically acclaimed Brian Wilson film Love & Mercy also follows a music story, though one far less familiar. Casey Affleck, Noah Jupe, Zooey Deschanel, Walton Goggins and Beau Bridges star. When Donnie Emerson (played by Affleck and Jupe) was a teenager growing up on his father’s farm in Fruitland, Washington (population 791) he spent his days writing music and dreaming of becoming a music star. And everyone in the family became invested in that dream, including his brother Joe (Goggins) who became his drummer, and especially his father, Don Sr (Bridges). He mortgaged his farm to build a $100,000 recording studio, and more to help Donnie make and release his first record. It went nowhere and the bulk of the farm had to be sold when the loan came due. But 30 years later, the overlooked album was rediscovered by the music scene. Suddenly Donnie, who continued to struggle and write and play his music, had gotten a taste of his childhood dreams. But it comes with the guilt of failure that haunted him for years, and involves having to play the songs that meant something as a teen, but not as a 50 year old man who has evolved as a musician. And it is all true.

Oliver Sim has shared a new track called ‘GMT’ and announced a string of headline dates for this autumn.The song is the latest preview of The xx musician’s debut solo album ‘Hideous Bastard’, which is due for release on September 9 via Young. It follows the previous singles ‘Romance With A Memory’, ‘Fruit’ and ‘Hideous’.“‘GMT’ was one of the first songs made for the record,” Sim explained of his stripped-back latest offering.“I’d chased Jamie [xx, producer] to Australia to escape British winter.

Beach Boys co-founder Brian Wilson, has sued the musician over a deal he recently struck for the royalties of a number of Beach Boys songs.Wilson agreed a reported $50million (£38.1million) deal with Universal Music Publishing Group in relation to his songs catalogue back in December, though the deal was not announced at the time.Wilson-Rutherford, who was married to Wilson from 1964 to 1978, first sued Wilson over the matter in February at Los Angeles Superior Court, and the case was moved to federal court last Friday (March 25).Wilson-Rutherford is alleging that she is owed at least $6.7million (£5.1million) from the song rights that were sold to Universal last year, and has requested a full account of the royalties she claims Wilson owes her from the past seven years (via Reuters).Wilson and Wilson-Rutherford’s 1981 divorce settlement saw the latter take a 50 per cent ownership of Wilson’s songwriting royalties from the 170 compositions the Beach Boys musician wrote during their marriage, including ‘California Girls’, ‘Wouldn’t It Be Nice’ and ‘Good Vibrations’.While Wilson-Rutherford was paid about $11million (£8.3million) from the writer’s share as a result of Wilson’s recent deal with Universal, she is now seeking the aforementioned $6.7million following the sale of his “reversion rights” – referring to US copyright law where artists can reclaim the rights to their songs 35 years after transferring them away – to the publisher.Her lawsuit adds that Wilson initially offered her $3.3million “to tie off all issues” between the ex-couple (via Rolling Stone), but Wilson-Rutherford then took legal action in February and alleged that she was owed twice as much.While they don’t dispute Wilson-Rutherford’s rights to the

Brian Wilson is involved in a legal battle with his ex-wife Marilyn Wilson-Rutherford over a $50 million deal he signed late last year in relation to his songs catalogue with Universal Music Publishing.According to legal papers, there were two elements to the mega-bucks deal between Wilson and the publisher, which already controlled his songs catalogue (although Wilson and his father originally set up their own publishing business in the early 1960s, that was subsequently sold with the catalogue ultimately ending up with Universal).The first element of the big deal saw Universal acquire the songwriter share of income Wilson retained under his original publishing deal. The second element related to Wilson’s termination right under American copyright law, via which he could seek to reclaim the US rights in his songs.
