Parents on Universal Credit plead for £20 a week extension to avoid homelessness

Hundreds of families on Universal Credit have written to Chancellor Rishi Sunak, calling on the government to make the £20 uplift permanent.

Anxious parents said they face homelessness in the coming months as the government prepares to scrap the £1,040 a year uplift, introduced to support workers at the start of the Covid crisis. "I don't want to become homeless or destitute and there is a very real chance of that happening," Julie, a Universal Credit claimant from Coventry, explained. "Without this money I will end up having to resort to food banks." Parents recorded their own video messages, calling on the Chancellor to maintain the uplift, as unemployment continues to soar in England.
