The Universal Credit uplift of £20-a-week is set to be extended by six months, it is claimed. Under the £3bn proposal, the benefit for 5.9million people would not be cut by £85 a month on April 12 as planned, and would instead have its current level extended by six months.

It follows months of pleas to avoid cutting the benefit relied on by millions, with ITV’s Robert Peston reporting a plan is now agreed, pending the final sign-off of the Prime Minister.

In a blog, the channel’s political editor - who has repeatedly obtained leaked details of lockdown changes in the past - also claimed furlough and the self-employment support scheme would be extended by the same period.
