Prime Minister Boris Johnson has told parents they should be sending their children into primary schools on Monday and issued the message: "Schools are safe." Primary schools are set to open across much of England following the Christmas break, with closures in place in Covid-19 hotspots such as London.
Appearing on the Andrew Marr Show, Mr Johnson said he understands the fears of parents but insisted: "Schools are safe. It is very, very important to stress that.
The risk to kids, to young people is really very, very small indeed. The risk to staff is very small." However, he did also warn that tougher measures may be required in the weeks to come - which may include the closure of schools.
