Daily Star's biggest headlines straight to your inbox! Belgian decathlete Thomas Van der Plaetsen suffered horrifying injuries as he aimed to win an Olympic medal in long jump in just the second decathlon event at the Tokyo Games this summer.

The 30-year-old had a good run-up to start with as he made his way towards the jumping point, but he stumbled at the launch as his right leg appeared to buckle during his take off, causing him to land face first into the sand pit.He suffered a hamstring tendon tear, a knee contusion and a tear in the ligaments of the right foot, according to a statement from Team Belgium and he left the track in a wheelchair to return to his home country for further checks on his injuries.Van der Plaetsen already.
