Castle Douglas’ new all-weather sports pitch was officially opened at the weekend. And it showed it was up to the test, with games taking place on the 3G surface at the town’s high school despite the bad weather.Threave Rovers Youth Development, which runs the sports facilities outside school hours, has been busy upgrading the surface of the old multi-use games area to ensure Castle Douglas is no longer the biggest town in the Stewartry without a 3G pitch. The weather meant some aspects of Saturday’s celebrations – such as stalls and some football games – were held in the sports hall, while the bike shelters provided handy cover for the barbecue and ice cream stall. But there were games on the MUGA and the weather even improved enough for some matches on the grass pitches.Supporters of the project – which received £30,000 from The Holywood Trust – were present with the Scottish Football Partnership paying a visit on Friday.Money raised from the day will be donated to local charities.Although Threave Youths are responsible for the facilities, including the MUGA, they are available for anyone to use and rent.
