Former United midfielder Butt is the head of first-team development at the club these days, and has overseen the smooth transitions into the senior setup enjoyed by the likes of Scott McTominay and Mason Greenwood.
Common consensus has it that current boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is more willing to give youth a chance that either of predecessors Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho, both of whom made big money moves during their time at Old Trafford.
Van Gaal brought in the Argentinean winger Angel Di Maria for£59.7million in the summer of 2014, while Radamel Falcao was also added on a lucrative loan deal.
