From Thursday 24 September in England, all hospitality venues must by law serve food and drink using table service only. That means no more propping up the bar, or ordering your food from the bar in a pub.

You need a waiter. However, there are some important exemptions to the "table service only" rule for takeaways, or if the venue doesn't serve alcohol.

These exemptions mean you can still, by law, queue up for food in most coffee shops and fast food joints. McDonald's is still reviewing its internal rules so we don't know for sure what they'll be yet.

But what does the say about places like McDonald's and Starbucks? We've asked Downing Street and studied the new rules - and below is what we were told.
