She polled 10,129 votes to earn a majority of 1757 over second-Labour candidate Kenny Stevenson, the Fortissat councillor, in a result declared at 1am on Friday after the constituency’s second polling day in a week.
The new MP – who is succeeding party colleague Neil Gray following his switch to Holyrood – told how she was “honoured” to be elected and said in her declaration speech: “I hope that by being elected as the only woman of colour in Scotland [at Westminster], people from minority groups of all communities look at me and think, ‘if that 28-year-old lassie from Lanarkshire can do it, so can I’.”The Lanarkshire Live app is available to download now.
