NASA is planning to crash a spacecraft into asteroids at 14,500mph in a bid to protect Earth. A giant asteroid known to astronomers as 1998 OR2 is hurtling past our planet today and the 2.5 mile-wide space rock could potentially have wiped out civilisation if it had hit, an expert claimed.

Now there's a new plan to protect Earth against dangerous asteroids. In July next year, NASA will be launching a spacecraft designed to slam into the surface of an asteroid bound for Earth while it’s still far enough away to be deflected off course.

The Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) will target a pair of asteroids, slamming a half-tonne projectile into the 500ft "moon" orbiting an asteroid called Didymos.
