A murder investigation has been launched following the death of a 31-year-old man in a suspected hit-and-run collision in Gateshead, Northumbria Police said.

Officers were called just after 8.15am on Wednesday, to a report that a Renault Megane had failed to stop after knocking down the man outside a takeaway on Dunston Enterprise Park.

Emergency services attended but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. He has since been identified as Paul Dean Sammons of Teams.

Specialist officers are supporting his family, police said. A 36-year-old man is being held on suspicion of murder while another five men and one woman arrested earlier on Wednesday remain in custody, police said.
