Charles Ingram
Charles William Ingram (born 6 August 1963) is an English novelist, computer repairman, and former British Army major who became known for being accused and convicted of cheating on the television game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? in 2001, after winning the maximum prize of one million pounds. Following a lengthy trial at Southwark Crown Court, he was convicted on a single count of procuring the execution of a valuable security by deception. He was convicted of an unrelated insurance fraud in 2003, and ordered to resign his commission as a major by the Army Board.

Charles Ingram has always insisted his innocence in the Who Wants To Be A Millionaire cheating scandal. The father-of-three, who became known as the Coughing Major, was accused of scamming his way to the top prize in the game show hosted by Chris Tarrant.

The incredible story has now been turned into ITV's Quiz, starring Michael Sheen s Tarrant, Matthew Macfadyen as Ingram and Sian Clifford as his wife, Diana.

Despite his denials, the couple were found guilty of procuring the executon of a valuable security by deception. They were each handed suspended sentences and fined £15,000 and ordered to pay £10,000 towards prosecution costs, which was later increased to £65,000.
