Margaret Thatcher’s former press secretary has branded Dominic Cummings a “malevolent presence” who thinks he could run the country better than the civil service.
Sir Bernard Ingham also claimed the Government’s handling of the coronavirus crisis was a “confused mess” because ministers were “all over the show”.
He said they should instead have shown “a certain humility” at the outset of the pandemic rather than suggesting they had a firm grip on everything.
Sir Bernard, Mrs Thatcher’s spin doctor for most of her 11 years in office, said Whitehall was “demoralised” by the way senior mandarins had been removed at Mr Cummings’s behest, because he regarded them as either “not up to it” or not sufficiently pro-Brexit.
