eBay.Thomas Heller from Bitterfield, Germany bought the cabinets for just €240 (£203) having negotiated the price down from €300 (£253).Inside one of the cabinets, bought from an elderly couple’s estate sale, the 50-year-old social housing project director found two hidden boxes, containing wads of cash totalling €150,000 (£126,166).However, rather than pocketing the forgotten money he found inside, Heller took the furniture to a local police station.
He told a local news outlet: "One was open and a lot of €100 bills were looking at me."They opened the second, locked cupboard in front of my eyes.
There were larger bills in the envelopes. Two hundred, five hundred."Police then launched an investigation in an attempt to find the original owner of the kitchen and thus the cash.
Police spokesperson Astrid Kuchta confirmed that the kitchen had come from a "household liquidation by an elderly couple from Halle", and that a 91-year-old woman from Halle was the original owner of the cash. "The two cash boxes were well hidden in areas of the furniture that were difficult to see," Kuchta explained.
