Manchester United missed out on signing Erling Haaland a few years back because they refused to insert a release clause into his contract.It was clear the Norwegian was destined for greatness after exploding onto the scene with Red Bull Salzburg, and in December 2019 a two-way tussle for his signature between United and Borussia Dortmund began.The Red Devils assumed they had the edge, especially with Haaland's former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer leading the charm offensive, but the 19-year-old opted to join Dortmund instead.
Why? Because unlike United the German club offered him an out, according to Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke."At the end of the day, the truth is we gave him a release clause - otherwise he would have gone to Manchester United," Watzke told German outlet Ruhr Nachtrichten.As bizarre as it sounds, Haaland was a bit of unknown quantity back then.
