contraceptive pill could be coming sooner than expected as trials on humans are set to begin within the year. US scientists have been attempting to develop a non-hormonal male contraceptive pill with the team seeing safe and effective tests on mice.Following the success, the plans are to hold clinical trials on humans soon.
Researchers from the University of Minnesota presented their new pill at at the American Chemical Society’s Spring 2022 conference, reported Vice.
The pill is thought to be a cut above the rest as it does not need to target testosterone, the male sex hormone. This greatly decreases the risk of side effects which are found in other prototypes that have never made it to shelves.
Researcher Abdullah al Noman explained: “Most female birth control pills work on the female sex hormones.“Targeting the male sex hormone leads to a lot of side effects such as weight gain, depression and increased risk of cardio vascular diseases.“Men are less willing to take a birth control pill that has significant side effects.
