Owning one’s sex appeal is back – and it’s all thanks to a 58-year-old French woman
rocked her semi-sheer, bodycon green maxi dress last week, and the generally positive response that greeted her appearance in it, that the French know how to age better than the rest of us?Or are they simply more appreciative of silver foxes and whatever the female equivalent of that is? The continuing regard in which the likes of Catherine Deneuve, Fanny Ardant, Inès de la Fressange, Juliette Binoche, Isabelle Huppert, Sophie Marceau and Carine Roitfeld are held in their native land would suggest the former is true. Or do the two states go hand in hand? The more one knows about looking after oneself, the better one ages. Which, in turn, means that other people’s responses to one’s mere presence are warmer, making one feel more confident and happier, which then makes one more alluring.Whatever you consider the merits, or otherwise, of Leroy-Beaulieu’s sheath, it’s hard not to admire the je m’en fous daring of wearing it, especially compared with the general tent-like shrouds that have dominated elsewhere for so long. To be fair, some of this attitude is rubbing off on those of us who aren’t French.
