German prosecutors were not told about fresh searches for Madeleine McCann – and say they do not even know what prompted them.
Portuguese police sent divers to explore three wells last week near where German suspect Christian Brueckner used to hang out.
But Braunschweig public prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters has revealed he was not alerted in advance. His remarks will raise further concerns about the hunt for Maddie, who vanished from her Praia da Luz holiday home in 2007.
It has been plagued by claims of “botches” and missed chances to find her by Portuguese police. Mr Wolters, overseeing the investigation into paedophile Brueckner, said of Thursday’s search: “I read about it, but the measures were not taken in consultation with us. “
