German police carried out an "ominous" search through the night as they dug a 10 metre long hole in a rented private garden once thought to have been used by the Madeleine McCann suspect.

The allotments are on the outskirts of Hanover, four miles from Christian Brueckner's former addresses in the Linden area of the city and backs onto a canal.
