The German police search of the garden allotment where the Madeleine McCann prime suspect lived was “an act of pure desperation,” according to his lawyer.

Officers spent two days digging up the foundations of the Christian Brueckner's former rented shack - removing concrete rubble from the remains.

Diggers, sniffer dogs, ground penetrating radar and drones were used to examine the site near Hanover where he stayed after Madeleine vanished.

When they left on Wednesday evening, they refused to say if they had discovered anything on the site. But it is believed they lifted a stone slab to find an underground cellar full of corrugated iron which a sniffer dog reacted to and started barking.
