More than 10million people in London, parts of Essex and Hertfordshire will plunge into a Tier 3 coronavirus lockdown from 12.01am on Wednesday.
Matt Hancock confirmed the move to MPs after they were told cases in the capital have grown exponentially "off the chart". The Health Secretary said there had been "very sharp, exponential rises" which may be due to a newly-discovered variant of coronavirus which is "growing faster".
He said over 1,000 cases of the new strain in nearly 60 council areas have already been found. Mr Hancock stressed there was currently "nothing to suggest" the new variant was either more deadly - or resistant to a vaccine.
