An extra 10 million Britons face tougher Covid-19 restrictions as the government announced London and parts of Essex and Hertfordshire will plunge into Tier 3.
Health Secretary Matt Hancock made the announcement - effective as of 12.01 on Wednesday - as he spoke of a new strain of coronavirus that spreads more rapidly being present in the south of the country.
Mr Hancock said the changes were needed to tackle the "very sharp exponential rise" of Covid-19 cases in London and parts of Hertfordshire and Essex.
