Members of a south Manchester running club had a brush with greatness last week when they got the chance to run side by side with an Olympian.

The Datsuns have announced the details of their 2025 UK and European tour which is set to kick off early next year.The New Zealand rockers took to their official social media pages to announce that they will be hitting the road next March for a string of shows across Europe and the UK.The band will Kick off the tour at Lido in Berlin on March 11 before making stops in cities such as Groningen, Brussels, Nimes, Barcelona, Madrid, Paris and Antwerp. The Fall Festival trifecta of Venice/Telluride/Toronto have traditionally been the venues for the serious start of Oscar season. But that kind of awards season mojo has been shifting, however slowly, with the most recent Best Picture winner, Oppenheimer released in July 2023, and 2022 winner Everything Everywhere All At Once released in March of their respective years. In fact the big Oscar opponent and BAFTA winner to the latter title, All Quiet On The Western Front also defied the odds, having first played at Berlin in late winter of 2022, around the same time Everything Everywhere debuted at SXSW. Cannes also has become a much bigger factor in recent years launching such winners and contenders as Parasite, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, Triangle Of Sadness, Anatomy Of A Fall, Drive My Car, The Zone Of Interest and more in the past few years that all went on to Best Picture nominations, against the previous common wisdom that Cannes was a risky place to start an Oscar run as May is so far away from the prime time to campaign. So in other words everything everywhere is being turned on its head when it comes to all things Oscar.

Leo Barraclough International Features Editor Films Boutique has picked up international rights to Albert Serra’s documentary “Afternoons of Solitude” (Tardes de Soledad) ahead of its world premiere in the competition section of the San Sebastian Film Festival. The film marks the third collaboration between Serra and Berlin-based Films Boutique after “Liberté,” winner of the Special Jury Prize in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard in 2019, and “Pacifiction,” which premiered in Cannes competition in 2022 and went on to earn nine nominations and two wins at France’s Cesar.

Nick Vivarelli International Correspondent “Hey Joe,” a drama in which James Franco plays a U.S. Navy sailor stationed in post-World War II Naples, will world premiere at the Rome Film Festival next month. The gritty film, directed by Claudio Giovannesi (“Gomorrah” TV series, “Piranhas”), is produced by Italy’s Palomar in tandem with RAI Cinema and Vision Distribution, which will release the film in Italy.

Jamie Lang Catalan Carlos Marqués-Marcet’s best film win at Toronto’s Platform for “They Will Be Dust” points to a larger trend. Backed by generous government support, experienced producers and sales and distribution companies with impeccable track records domestically and abroad, there is a generation of Catalan filmmakers that is hitting its stride with some of the most exciting titles set to come out of Europe over the next year.

One Piece has added Joe Manganiello (True Blood, Magic Mike franchise) and Lera Abova (Bumper in Berlin, Honey Don’t) to the Season 2 cast. Manganiello will play “Mr. 0” and Abova will portray “Miss All Sunday.” The announcement was made during the Netflix Geeked Week Live show Thursday. Variety spoke to its director, Milko Lazarov, whose previous film, “Ága,” premiered in the main competition of the Berlin Film Festival, and debuts its trailer (below). The film centers on Ali and his daughter Tarika, who live peacefully, but isolated, from their community in rural Bulgaria.

Nick Vivarelli International Correspondent Former Locarno and Berlin Film Festival chief Carlo Chatrian has been appointed director of Italy’s National Film Museum in Turin. The cinematic shrine housed in the iconic Mole Antonelliana domed tower, which is the Northern city’s main landmark, has long been known as a treasure trove of movie memorabilia, including pre-cinema magic lanterns and Federico Fellini’s red scarf and letters, as well as for its sleek glass elevator leading to a view of Turin and the Alps in the surrounding Piedmont region.

The first Seriesly Berlin wrapped last night, and the general feeling from those in attendance is it could be a worthwhile addition to a television conference space in Germany that already houses the likes of Berlinale Series Market and the well-regarded Seriencamp in Cologne.

Italy’s National Cinema Museum in the northern city of Turin has named former Berlin Film Festival head Carlo Chatrian as its new director. Chatrian will be in post for five years.

The alliance catches Lacuesta and Campo at new career highs, Lacuesta having directed Berlin competition player “One Year, One Night” and “Saturn Return,” a Spanish Film and Direction winner at March’s Malaga Festival which has just been selected as Spain’s entry in the International Feature Oscar race; Campo co-wrote Iciar Bollain’s anticipated “I’m Nevenka,” which world premieres in San Sebastian main competition this weekend.

Nick Vivarelli International Correspondent Iranian directorial duo Maryam Moghaddam and Behtash Sanaeeha, who in February were banned by Iranian authorities from traveling to the Berlin Film Festival to launch their film “My Favourite Cake,” have now been subjected to repeated travel bans after their passports were returned. Last week, Moghaddam — who is Swedish-Iranian — was ready to fly to Sweden to visit her family and attend the Swedish premiere of “My Favourite Cake” when she was stopped.

SOPHIE‘s self-titled posthumous album has been revealed – check out the full list of songs below.Yesterday (September 17), the late musician’s estate revealed on social media the posthumous record’s tracklist to celebrate what would’ve bene her 38th birthday.The hyper-pop pioneer and PC Music affiliate (full name Sophie Xeon) tragically passed away on January 30, 2021 aged 34 following her accidental fall from a three storey building in Athens.The eponymous posthumous album for the producer was announced in June this year.
