A judge hit out at the 'nonsensical' excuse given by a man who was caught trying to hide a scalpel in Piccadilly Gardens. Ruben Willis, 25, claimed he was 'playing' with the weapon while he was out 'socialising' with his girlfriend the day before the lockdown was imposed, and as the Government was urging people to observe social distancing.

Manchester Crown Court heard that a police officer who had just arrested a man near Piccadilly Gardens had earlier seen Willis with the man.

As he approached Willis, the officer saw him try and hide something in the soil of a flowerbed, prosecutor Rachel Widdicombe said.
