Barry’s Bootcamp. A workout concept that started life in LA, based on high intensity class-led works outs. It was founded in 1998 but only recently has it really taken off in the UK where it currently has nine studios; eight in London and one in Manchester with more in the pipeline.
Arguably the name Barry doesn’t exactly evince a sense of SoCal ebullience here in Blighty. There’s the Welsh town of the same name where my mother was born, which is about as refreshingly distant from Goop-style wellness as you can get.
Elsewhere, you may think of the schadenfreudian TV character Barry from Eastenders, whose very moniker instills a sense of bathos.
Then of course there’s the great comedy genius Barry Cryer, who passed away recently. He’d have no doubt found the idea of a gym called Barry’s Bootcamp an absolute hoot, perhaps even worthy of a parrot joke.
