mum has shared a heartbreaking back-to-school message after losing her five-year-old son to a deadly virus. Arlene Smith's son Jack passed away in December 2012 after falling ill with a adenovirus infection - a common virus which in most cases sees patients suffer from upper respiratory symptoms.

In serious cases the virus can also invade the lungs and intestines. Rarely, these viruses sneak past the immune system and strike the liver, heart or brain.Jack had gone to bed with a temperature, but when his dad tried to wake him for school the following morning the youngster was unconscious.

He was rushed to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, in Edinburgh, where doctors discovered he had been left brain damaged due to a lack of oxygen.
