Van de Beek was an unused substitute 18 times last season and the United midfielder was overlooked in favour of Jadon Sancho, Scott McTominay and Jesse Lingard as United attempted to salvage a winner at St Mary's.
Sancho emerged in the 58th minute for Anthony Martial after United equalised through Mason Greenwood and midfielders Fred and Nemanja Matic then made way for McTominay and Lingard.
