Chancellor Rishi Sunak has been pressured by boffins at the Resolution Foundation think tank following the disastrous impact of the coronavirus lockdown.

The proposal to splash cash for the public to spend at “face to face” retail – rather than online – has been inspired by similar measures used in China, Taiwan and Malta.The proposal would come at a cost of £30 billion, should the Treasury decide to go ahead.

Chancellor Sunak is due to announce a new raft of measures to protect the economy in a “summer update” on Wednesday – and the latest.
