On Monday (May 24), the Manchester Evening News reported an official government website stated journeys in and out of UK areas of affected by the spread of the Indian variant should be avoided, 'unless essential'.
Exemptions included work and education. But local officials, including Andy Burnham, had not been informed of the change, and criticised the government for its lack of clarity.
