Stoichkov played under Van Gaal during his second stint at the club and Van Gaal's first spell as manager in 1997.The Bulgarian forward left for CSKA Sofia in 1998 and Stoichkov has opened up about Van Gaal's management style, claiming he is the reason that Juan Roman Riquelme was not a success at Barcelona and saying that "many have suffered in football due to his silly things."
