The France international was handed the iconic jersey on his arrival from Monaco as a teenager back in 2015, after costing the club an initial fee of £36m.At the time Martial was the club’s third most expensive signing, with manager Louis van Gaal calling the fee ‘ridiculous’.Despite a positive first season at the club that saw the forward score 17 goals in all competitions, a decision that took place before his second season left him feeling rather unhappy.
The versatile striker was informed that he would need to vacate his No.9 shirt for the incoming Zlatan Ibrahimovic, which would see him take the No.11.
