Drug seizures in Scots jails double during Covid-19 pandemic as 'Zombie Spice' causes havoc behind bars

prisons more than doubled in a year- despite the coronavirus pandemic.Guards confiscated drugs or suspected drugs from prisoners across Scots jails 2,199 times in 2019.But a Freedom of Information request from the Daily Record has revealed that number rocketed to 5,480 last year.In many facilities there has been a rise in psychoactive or suspected psychoactive drugs- often known as 'legal highs'.These include synthetic cannabis type drugs like 'Spice' which is said to be causing havoc behind bars.HMP Addiewell, in West Lothian, recorded just six seizures of psychoactive substances in 2019- and 414 in 2020.In Glasgow's Barlinnie, there were no recorded seizures of the drugs in 2019 and 87 last year.Scottish Conservative shadow justice.
