The lesser talked about effect of the current Covid-19 lockdown is the huge surge in domestic violence incidents. For some, enforced isolation is having a terrifying and devastating implication for their safety with many frightened victims comparing lockdown to being in a prison cell with their abuser.
Domestic abuse support groups have reported a shocking 50% rise in calls and online requests for help since lockdown began and in one single day the UK’s largest domestic abuse charity, Refuge, reported a 700% increase in calls from at–risk individuals.
There have been pleas for urgent government action, with a raft of measures being discussed and heard in Parliament. But we need to do more, and we need to do it now.
