Singer Mica Paris has told how she sobbed after visiting a cramped cellar once used to hide slaves. The 51-year-old was left deeply moved by a trip to the Deep South for a BBC documentary and learned about Harriet Tubman.
The 19th century activist helped guide 700 slaves to freedom. Mica, who was taken to visit the Slave Haven Underground Museum in Memphis, Tennessee, said: “She would hide slaves in a cellar in the pitch black. “I was taken down there to experience what a slave would have felt like and was told there could have been 15 or more slaves down there at one time. “Having escaped from the plantations, they were now on the run.
