DOCTOR Who is set to cast its first ever transgender companion for the Time Lord. Rebecca Root, who starred in BBC sitcom Boy Meets Girl, will play Tania Bell in a new adventure starring Eighth Doctor, Paul McGann.

Tania will appear in Doctor Who: Stranded, an episode released by Big Finish, whose audiobooks are a continuation of the Time Lord's adventures.

Opening up about her new role, Rebecca said: "[Tania is] a person like all the other people I have played and hope to play in the future. "She’s not perfect, but she’s not a mess, and certainly, I don’t think her gender identity has any influence on her behaviour in the story," Rebecca added to Nerdist.
