It was shortly after World War One in 1919 that Vera Lynn narrowly escaped the grips of a deadly disease at the tender age of just two and a half years old.
The legendary British singer, who lived to the age of 103, nearly died as a result of having contracted diphtheritic croup over 100 years ago.
Vera recalled that battling the terrifying respiratory illness was one of her earliest memories of childhood. After contracting the serious illness, the young Vera was rushed to an isolation unit where she spent three months battling the disease.
Due to her hospitalisation, Vera was forced to miss Christmas before finally being released shortly before her third birthday in March 1920.
