For Captain Tom Moore and thousands of other British troops fighting abroad in the Second World War, it was Vera Lynn who kept the dream of going home alive.
Stationed in far-off countries such as Burma, India and Egypt after being called up to fight the Nazis and the Japanese, they were lifted out of the terror and misery of war by the sound of Vera’s voice on the airwaves.
So it was fitting that Captain Tom, who became a national treasure himself after raising more than £30million for the NHS, led the tributes to the Forces’ Sweetheart from former servicemen.
