A man who was starstruck by Dame Vera Lynn as a paperboy has told how he went on to become her pen pal for 40 incredible years.
Geoffrey Hanson first fell under the spell of the legendary Forces’ Sweetheart when he was just seven. He heard her “mesmerising” voice on a radio while doing his delivery round in 1939, in the early days of the Second World War, and was instantly smitten.
Now 87, and still as captivated as ever, he has revealed how he began a correspondence with the star in his 40s – and was amazed that it lasted four decades.
