Covid-19 second wave ‘could hit Britain in October when we won’t know it from a cold’

Brits will struggle to tell the difference between a common cold and coronavirus with a second wave of Covid-19 likely in the winter, a top government scientific adviser has warned.

SAGE member Sir Jeremy Farrar said the country has just 48 hours to interrupt the chains of transmission or the bug could spread out of control again.

He said Britain "can prevent the national catastrophe" of March and April recurring, but without "core infrastructures in place" then a "very nasty rebound" is likely in October and November.

With second spikes of infection already in Europe, including Germany, Sir Jeremy said "I think we will see rebounds" in "certain situations" - pointing to the outbreaks in meat packing factories as an example.
