A man has been arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage to the statue of Winston Churchill which was sprayed with the word 'racist' tonight.
The Metropolitan Police made the arrest during an Extinction Rebellion demonstration in Parliament Square, central London. Pictures shared on social media appeared to show graffiti had been sprayed on the statue branding the former prime minister a "racist".
The words "is a racist" were sprayed in yellow under the monument. Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said the graffiti would be removed from the Winston Churchill statue as soon as possible.
He said: "This appalling vandalism is completely unacceptable. It will be fully investigated and the statue will be cleaned as quickly as possible." The Met
