Christmas ceasefire covid call shot down by leading Scottish medic

coronavirus "amnesty" on Christmas day has been shot down by Scotland's deputy chief medical officer. Dr Nicola Steedman was responding to Bishop John Keenan's proposal, which he had likened to a legendary ceasefire in the First World War trenches.

Bishop Keenan had said the government should look at the plan to put some "hope" into the day. There are growing concerns households will still be banned from mixing inside, despite hopes the current restrictions will help bring down infections and avoid the need for a "digital Christmas".

However, Dr Steedman, on the BBC's Seven Days programme, said last night: "I've heard to this referred to as an 'amnesty', a little bit like the previous amnesties on Christmas day in the world war.
