Brits will wager £300million in a four-day frenzy of boozing and betting at the Cheltenham festival in defiance of coronavirus.
The four-day meeting starts tomorrow, despite the threat posed by the virus. Bookmakers say punters are raring to go with up to 67,500 racegoers set to descend on the Gloucester-shire course each day for The Jockey Club’s “ultimate bucket list event”.
Ladbrokes has predicted £35,000-a-second will be wagered on the 28 races from tomorrow to Friday. Racegoers will down an estimated 265,000 pints of Guinness and 50,000 bottles of champagne.
