A British Falklands War hero was shot dead bravely defending his partner in a farm robbery in South Africa. Former Royal Navy sailor Julian Stobbs, 59, was blasted multiple times in the head and chest after four armed gang members broke into their home as they slept.

Long-term partner Myrtle Clarke, 53, escaped unharmed after the noise of the gunshots alerted nearby neighbours and forced the killers to flee, leaving Julian dying.

The killers entered the couple's bedroom in the early hours of the morning on Friday, making off with two cell phones and two laptops.

The death of Mr Stobbs was confirmed on the couple's Facebook page. Paramedics rushed to the remote Jazz Farm in Lanseria, 30 miles north of Johannesburg, but nothing could be done
