Company bosses back a minimum wage hike – but want Government help to fund a rise, a report reveals today. A 36-page study by the Learning and Work Institute and Carnegie UK Trust – shows 54% support the Government’s policy of increasing the legal pay floor to two-thirds of the average median pay by 2024.
The investigation – based on a survey of more than 1,000 businesses and carried at the start of the coronavirus crisis – found captains of industry believe a higher minimum wage could help boost productivity.
But they said ministers should support firms with extra help for investing in skills and training, or offering a temporary cut in national insurance contributions.
