Speaking at a briefing this afternoon, the Prime Minister said the government was concerned about the B.1.617.2 strain of the virus, often called the Indian variant, which is thought to be driving a rapid increase in Covid cases in the town.
From Monday, May 17, people will be allowed to meet in groups of up to 30 outdoors; pubs, cafes, restaurants and cinemas can reopen indoors; and more people will be able to attend weddings and funerals.
