Greenock Morton star sacked by club amid £600k cannabis smuggling charge

Professional footballer Jay Emmanuel-Thomas has been sacked from Greenock Morton FC after being accused of smuggling £600,000 worth of cannabis into the UK.The Scottish Championship club confirmed on Thursday night that he has been released with immediate effect.

A statement from the club reads: "Greenock Morton FC can confirm that the contract of Jay Emmanuel-Thomas has been terminated with immediate effect.

The club will be making no further comment on the matter."It comes after the former Aberdeen striker, who was on a six-month contract with the club, was arrested by police at the National Crime Agency at an address in Gourock, Inverclyde, on Wednesday.

He was taken into custody following the arrest of two women - including Emmanuel-Thomas's partner - at Stansted Airport on September 2.The two women were questioned by Border Force officers before four suitcases containing 60kg worth of cannabis were seized.
