Sam Mendes

Sir Samuel Alexander Mendes CBE (born 1 August 1965) is an English film and stage director, producer and screenwriter. In theatre, he is known for his dark re-inventions of the stage musicals Cabaret (1994), Oliver! (1994), Company (1995), and Gypsy (2003). He directed an original West End stage musical for the first time with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2013).

For directing the play The Ferryman, Mendes was awarded the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Play in 2019.

Benedict Cumberbatch, Michaela Coel Among Donors as Sam Mendes' Theater Artists Fund Raises $2M

The Theatre Artists Fund, spearheaded by Sam Mendes to help support freelancers in the U.K. stage industry struggling during the lockdown due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, has raised £1.6 million ($2 million) since it launched on July 6, with donations from a number of major stars.

Set up by Mendes, The Society of London Theatre and U.K. Theatre and established with a £500,000 ($636,000) donation from Netflix, the fund has grown with support from The Estate Of Sir Peter and Lady Saunders who will join Netflix as headline supporter, as well as other donations received from The Mackintosh Foundation, Eileen Davidson Productions, Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation, Linbury Trust, Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter, Imelda Staunton, Eddie.
